Hard-Disk and USB Drive Speed Comparisons

Continuing the post Harddisk Drive Speed in MB/s, here are some benchmarks for consumer grade hard disks, USB thumb drives, and solid state drives (SSD).

A 64 GB SanDisk USB 3.0 thumb drive:

This USB drive has only half of the speed of the USB drive given below.

A 32 GB JetFlash Transcend USB 3.0 thumb drive:

The classical hard disk has roughly the same read-speed as the first USB stick, but can write data a lot faster, more than five times faster.

ADATA 128 GB SSD: Screenshot from 2014-12-27 18-18-25

The SSD beats it all. It is three times as fast as the first USB stick when it comes to reading, and more than twenty times as fast when it comes to writing data.

Benchmarking tool used was gnome-disk, contained in Ubuntu package gnome-disk-utility. This tool has nothing to do with the GNOME desktop, so the name is a bit misleading.
